Dhangadimai Municipality, Siraha – An impactful event unfolded today at Tulasiram Satyabhama Dotel Secondary School, Bishnupur, where over 50 enthusiastic participants gathered to learn and discuss sustainable agricultural practices and climate-smart farming. The program, jointly organized by CARE Nepal, National Farmers Group Federation (NFGF), Green Rangers Earth, Madhesh Pradesh Youth conference on Climate Change (MPYCCC), and We For Nature (WFN), brought together students, teachers, and representatives from over five farmers’ groups.
The event commenced with opening remarks by the distinguished Dilip Kumar Shah and Nirmal Dhamala from NFGF, who underscored the importance of collective action to tackle pressing environmental challenges.
Key Insights from the Event
- Ashish Lamichhane, environmental activist and founder of Green Rangers Earth, highlighted the dangers of burning dung cakes—a traditional practice still prevalent in rural areas. “Burning dung cakes not only reduces the fertility of soil but also contributes to air pollution, directly affecting human health and the environment. Shifting towards composting practices can safeguard both health and agriculture,” he stated.
- Sundar Timalsina, an agricultural expert, elaborated on the adverse effects of excessive agrochemical use. “Overreliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides harms soil health, disrupts ecosystems, and poses long-term threats to food security. The need to adopt organic and climate-smart farming techniques is more urgent than ever,” he emphasized.
The event also featured an inspiring speech session where Dilip Kumar Shah encouraged participants to take ownership of their farming practices, stating, “Farmers are the backbone of sustainable development. By adopting eco-friendly methods, we can secure a better future for generations to come.” Similarly, Nirmal Dhamala added, “True progress begins with awareness and action. It’s heartening to see such enthusiasm from students and farmers alike.”
Two student participants, Prabin Sada and Puja Yadav, shared their learning experiences. Prabin remarked, “I never realized how harmful burning dung cakes could be to the environment and our health. I am determined to spread this knowledge in my community.” Puja expressed, “This program taught me the value of natural farming. I look forward to sharing these insights with my family and contributing to a greener future.”
Volunteer Contributions and Media Coverage
Volunteer Asmita Shah shared details about the event’s seamless execution, attributing its success to the dedication of the organizing team and local support. “This was not just an event but a milestone in spreading awareness about sustainable practices in our community,” she said.
